Www Sites Free Info Market Size And Profit Info

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
What are URLs for www databases which provide, free of charge, information about the size of a given market as well as an estimate of its profitability? For clarification, here's a made-up example for what I'm seeking: for a given market, say, for example, "hot tubs and spas" market, I want to access a database which would show, free of charge, among other information about this market space, an estimate of the size, for example, 10 million hot-tubs and spas were sold in the USA in 2004, and would also indicate, free of charge, an estimate of the the average gross profit margin (or other profit measure) for such sales was for example, 60%.

I am not aware of a www.holygrailmarketdata.com where all the world's marketing data is produced free for the taking. I have found this kind of information very dependent on the industry. Many industry associations and trade journals have this kind of information. For instance, for appliances, you can check Appliance Magazine where producers report their production and the magazine gathers it and produces overall statistics. For semicondustors, WSTS gathers producer data and publishes...but for members only. For computers, various organizations track sales and/or production, but you have to research press releases to find it. The US government has some demographic data on population data from the census at https://www.census.gov/

For profit estimates, competitive analysis is the only way I've been able to come up with data - e.g. go through the 10K's for the manufacturers and make educated guesses.

SRSD covers the ad game only: https://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/infosrv/lue/HTU/SRDS.pdf#search='Stan...

What is Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS)?
SRDS is the leading provider of media rate and data for the advertising industry. It lists advertising rates,
editorial or programming content, circulation and other basic information about various advertising media.
SRDS also contains selected demographic and market information for metropolitan areas and counties.

In short, no, I don't think there is a freerepository for the data you seek. The value added of the "paid" repository is that they do the legwork I described and summarized for you. Quicker for you, but you pay.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps you shorten your hunt for what may not exist.

Like Wayde I strongly doubt the existence of such a database.

Just finding this information someplace where you can buy it would be a huge help.

Getting it free - seems unlikely to me. Why would anyone do all that work and then give the knowledge away? What would be in it for them?

The only place you might stand a chance is some kind of industry-specific association where they may gather info fom members, aggregate and share. But then, even they may require you to be a member to get access to the information... So back to square one!

In your position, I would go talk to a retailer in your nearest spa and hot tub shop and see what info they can provide. Often that kind of shop-floor anecdotal infomation can help you extrapolate and build a composite picture that is very accurate, although not wholly evidence-based. Try several stores, maybe telephone some in diferent states to get a wider view.

    Hope this helps.

Possibly you forgot to mention that you also wanted the free information consolidated, analyzed and tabulated, preferably in Excel format with helpful charts and comparative graphs...

... and so I would suggest that you can download the financial statements of firms in various industries, e.g. hot tubs, from sites such as www.freeedgar.com - and can then interpoloate results based on demographics (annual sales, number of employees) for companies using data from ZAPDATA...

Of course, this will require you to do a bit of work, but as was mentioned earlier, there is no free lunch...

Papadoc (Steve), that answer alone is worth the full 250 points :-)

Sorry nothing new to add here, just may be worth calling industry representatives for whatever industry your interested in and ask the question!

Hi, John. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Google yet.

You're obviously a paid member of MarketingProfs, so you should have access to a really cool report called "Unlocking the Hidden Potential of Google." It's downloadable from the Premium Library page on this site.

I remember reading great examples in that report for finding data about a market's size. If you are smart about how you use keyword searches, you can probably uncover journal articles citing some of the numbers you're looking for.

It's AMAZING how inept most people are at using search tools (not implying that you fall into that category, though). Check it out!
