Strategy For Marketing Children's Songs

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Songs’n Stories is the maiden venture of my long cherished dream as a teacher, to produce songs and stories of a meaningful nature for young children, spanning an age group of 5 to 10 years.

Termed as EDUTAINMENT, the songs in the CD aim to Educate and Entertain, thereby stimulating young minds! Songs’n Stories can be used very effectively as a learning tool at home or in a classroom in a variety of ways.

The 1st CD, titled as Suja’s Songs’n Stories has been cut and has been favorably reviewed by leading Indian newspapers (am based in India). Currently the CD is being sold/distributed through personal contacts, word-of-mouth, and publicity from Newspaper reviews. The sale has been quite brisk, and I cut a second lot too !

Encouraged by this, I set up a small company, NotesnLines, to produce more such CDs, and other children related material.

I want to start marketing the CD and publicize NotesnLines forthcoming activities. I have started

I would like suggestions and recommendation from the experts on how I should take the initiative forward and also tips for the website which I am in the process of designing.

Some questions need answers before I can make many recommendations.

Are you looking for international customers? What is your advertising and marketing budget? Are the lessons on the CD unique to a certain nationality or are they broad in spectrum? What are you goals in terms of growth? What would happen if this product really took off? Are you prepared and able to accommodate drastic growth?

If you are attempting to branch off into other countries, I would find a point company in each country you are trying got enter. Create a partnership with that company so that they can handle the logistics involved with distributing the CDs and other materials. Obviously, shipping from India to other parts of the world can get expensive. I imagine the material on the CD is digital or can be digitized. Research companies that can take the digital product and turn it into a CD and market it in their respective area. Also, there are many venues to market the digital product. If you create an MP3 file, you can market it yourself to an international audience much easier. This would allow anyone, anywhere to buy it and download it immediately. If you choose to sell your product this way, make sure the person designing your site knows how to make it happen.

From there, I would send :30 second audio samples to the owners of as many children and family oriented web sites as I could. You might want to offer the site owner a chance to earn some money if they sell it on their site for you. This is commonly referred to as an affiliate program and there are companies that can manage this process for you.

It wouldn't hurt to send a "media kit" to teacher organizations in your target market. The media kit should contain materials about you and your program along with a sample audio. In the US we have Parent and Teacher Associations and many of the people involved are very vocal. If you get the material into the hands of as many of these people as you can, the word of mouth itself will boost sales and awareness tremendously.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. If I had a better idea of what you are striving to achieve, I would be able to offer a more detailed recommendation.

    Good Luck,

    Sujatha,
    Here what you can do:
    1. Advertise with your local cable tv service provider that way you will target your local community which will help increase the sales.
2.You can have some pamphlets or brochures which you can have your local newspaper agency put in the newspaper and send around telling about the songs included in the album .

My ideas are targeting the local market. For bigger picture ideas from puru and djohnson looks great. You can use them as well.

    Good Luck

I would encourage you to get out and hit up every record store, CD store and distribution house you can find. Surely someone would want to pick up and represent your product.

Find a record label well connected to distribution channels. They are into selling artists than can move units. if you have a product that will sell, they will hook their wagon onto your train because the more you sell, the more they make too!

Set up a website that enables you to sell direct to the public. I've a few clients that sell CD's direct to the public via online store. At least you can sell direct, and keep more per CD.

Here is a link to one of my musician clients (my team designed, built, and host his website). He has samples of his music online, as well as publishes his lyrics. Check it out at https://www.davidakurtz.com/

David does not sell CD's direct to the public (yet), but he does post his tour schedule and upcoming gigs on his website. Listen to the samples, and have a look around. I think this is a good example of what you may want your site to do for you.

Thank you all for good responses. Considering that this is my fist business venture, I have found the responses very useful, and they kindled some interesting thoughts and gave me good ideas to take things forward

Djohnson – I do not have a big budget – yet ! I believe that the songs are universal in nature, and in that sense they are ‘international’. I would love to go international, but I do not know how to ! From a growth point, I have enough material for 2 more CDs. In addition, I have developed a lot of material around the songs so that the CD can be sold as a kit. I am also talking to a very large (international) publisher who is evaluating my work for taking to China where there is a big push for English language, If that happens, the growth will be dramatic. Wow! I do hope with this info you will be able to give more tips ?
