Productivity Sofware Market

Posted by Anonymous on 1300 Points
Hi,

I'm looking for information on the productivity software market. One company that is an example is Mind Jet.

I'm also looking for information on the competitive landscape.

Anything would help.

Thank you!

If I were in your situation, and wanted information, I would set aside about 4-8 hours of time and be sure I had a set of multi-colored highlighters and plenty of paper in my laser printer. I would visit the sites of 50-100 "productivity software" companies, maybe starting with MindJet. (I'd build my list by doing Google keyword searches on a list of key words, and when I found a company which was close to what I wanted, I would Google their URL, click the link to see who links to them, and find sites which link to lots of similar companies.)

I'd bookmark 50 or so pages with lots of details... then print out (yes, print) the key informative pages from each site. Move away from your computer, to a large desk. Then, I'd get out my colored highlighters. I'd determine the kind of information I was looking for. Let's say I was interested in things like "examples of professional services provided" and "ROI analysis" and "reasons to buy Productivity software", for example. I would use one color for one type of info, and another color for another. (You can create multiple highligher colors by highlighting with yellow then highlighing a narrow line in a second color).

Now, go back to your computer, and key in the relevant data into Excel. It's a lot of work, it might take you 4 or 8 hours, but you wil have a fairly good overview of the market, as well as the players in the market and the key organizations and publications.

If you want someone to do this sort of analysis for you, I know a great market research guy who is home from school for a few weeks and might be interested... contact me offline, I'll put the two of you in touch (hi, Carl...)

Dima, thanks for providing more info. Apparently our posts crossed in Cyberspace. The more details you provide about what you are looking for, the more helpful we can be.

There are great sources of Market research (I used Gartner's years ago...) which typically are expensive. If you don't have a budget for this sort of thing but need the info and have time on your hands, you can build a list of competitors to MindJet using the technique I described earlier, and one you have a fairly comprehensive list of competitors you can get a rough idea of market size by looking up each competitor (e.g. using ZAPDATA) and tallying the number of employees and revenue figures.

You can also identify companies which are public companies and download their financial documents, which probably contain info on market size.

Right, you won't find employee size info with Google searches. Once you have a list of folks in the market, you will need to use third party sources (ReferenceUSA, Dun & Bradstreet / ZAPdata, Hoovers, Gale, GoLeads.com, onesource.com, there are plenty of them) to get estimates of employee sizes and revenues for private companies. I would suggest that you visit your local business library (maybe your county library has a central "business library") to see if they subscribe to any of these services.
