Where To Find Marketshare Information

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am working on a operating / marketing plan and would like to locate accurate census-grade revenue numbers for NAICS 541511: Custom Computer Programming Services. I am searching for for this data on a regional only basis (NY, NJ, PA, CT) in order to calculate local market share information.

This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in writing, modifying, testing, and supporting software to meet the needs of a particular customer.

I am searching the Internet and finding only old data (1997 census) and "pay-for-it" sources. Does any one have a website, Internet source or other means by which they recommend I could gain access to such data?

Thanks in advance.

I see what you mean. Here are some links to some resources that offer free stats.

I didn't dig deep enough to get a per state graph, but I did find 2003-2003 revenues for software companies.

    I hope this helps!

You might also check Dun & Bradstreet. You can pay for their services, or you can visit www.zapdata.com and run counts for each segment for free. You'll need to specify by SIC code rather than NAICS (e.g. 7371 is Custom Computer Programming Services, a quick run shows there are 411 firms in that SIC code in New York with revenues between $.5 million and $.9 million). There are several other similar sites which offer free counts, I have them bookmarked at the office... email me if you want the links.

In the office now... here are a few more links to mailing list info and counts:

www.biz-sales-leads.com (free counts, need to select by SIC code and # employees)

www.usadata.com (free counts, very handy site, can select by MSA, by sales volume range, year established, etc)

www.infousa.com (my personal favorite) - select by yellow page heading, States, Counties, MSA, etc - you may have access to records as well thru your public library, I have found the contact info to be more complete and updated than other sources, it seems that other demographic info (e.g. size of company) may be estimates (e.g. inferred from size of yellow page ad)

www.goleads.com (free counts, you can sign up for about $10 per month, has fewer contact names than ReferenceUSA)

and there are more sites, but I think this will get you going. (a few more sites are listed at www.salesvault.com/salesdirectory_saleslists.htm - and you can build a more comprehensive list of those sitesif you wish (and can find some handy marketing reference sites) by a Google advanced search to sites which link to the above).

By the way, I would suggest targeting by # of employees rather than annual revenues. I feel this info is generally more accurate (often the annual revenues are simply estimated, e.g. $110K times the number of employees) as well as more helpful in assessing a company's need for your services.

    Good luck - TeleMoxie
