How Often Should You Update Homepage Contents?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
My company manufactures and sells Industrial Absorbents, Leak & Spill products, Material Handling, etc...For my division, our target audience is the U. S. Federal Government. I currently update the contents of our homepage once a month and I also have a daily Product/Environmental Tip. The question has been asked if we could get away with only updating our content every other month instead of monthly. I personally think it needs to be at least monthly, but I wanted to get other web marketers opinions since I can't find any posted research on this subject.

I think once a month should be the MINIMUM. Depending on necessity, you may consider twice a month. As kwinters pointed out; fresh content is the key for return visits.

    Good Luck!

Gail, the perspective that Nicolas offered makes sense to me. Is the purpose of your site to attract repeat visitors to read dynamic content, or is it to provide product and buying info to potential customers?

Think for a second about what happens if an existing customer sends your URL to a colleague with hints about where to get product details, but when Dorothy hits the home page, it's all different! She expected Kansas, but landed in Oz?

That's an extreme example, of course, Toto.

I would update your home page (or its corners) when these things happen:

    - New or revised products are released.
    - Your company gets some press worth bragging about.
    - Your web metrics show that traffic patterns are snarled.

Updating for the sake of updating doesn't make sense to me! If it's brazenly effective already, leave it alone as long as possible.

    - Shelley
