How Should I Market My Software Product ?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have a software product, which is given out as freeware, easily downloadable from my company website. I have been doing en number of attempts, but I don't get enough results

I am frustrated , as no way I am able to get people to my website and make them download it. I have listed the product at all major software and freeware website, Tried with SEM, after having an SEO. posted to numerous blogs, created a blog specially for the product related talk. linked it to many linking sites, bookmarked it, I have published the product at numerous forums,I have taken care of everything, but nothing seems to work.

I am reading KHE for a while now, pretty new here, actually in my quest to market the product it led me here, I hope of getting some worthwhile solution which would help.

Thanks In Advance!
Pamela

    Hi Pam,
Are you checking the stats for your site to see if you are not getting traffic or your getting traffic but no takers for the software?

What's the software for? Can I take a look at your website? It's not listed in your profile.

    Thanks,
    MajorHal

    Hi MajorHal,
Its a pleasure that you are interested to help me out of this. I have provided below all the details you asked for,
I have put up Google Analytics on the website, to track the traffic. This shows me the places from where all the visitors are coming, with a Geo map, also it gives me the number of page hits and page views.

well as of now there are some 80 to 90 people in a day's time that visit the site, and out of them hardly 8 to 10 download the product. If I make more people come to the website, the chances of more people downloading it are more. So aim is to increase the hits.

The website name is https://www.purplenova.com and the name of the product is purplenova. it is a software that converts a PC to a web server. therefore people can host stuff like files/audio/video etc. directly from their home/office PC. well you will get to know more about the product from the website.

    Thanks,
    Pamela.

Note to Gary: seems like they do plan to sell ads and do marketing per https://www.purplenova.com/privacypolicy.html

Question for Pam: I'm a telemarketing guy, not a web techie. Is this spyware? How many "partners" will you share my info with? If I share my files with others, will they see their ads?

Generally speaking, if I were trying to better understand your competitors and your market, I'd identify some competitors, Google their URLs, and see where that leads. I'll hold off on giving more detailed suggestions hoping you will answer Gary's question (Vevolution) in detail.

Also, could I ask that you complete your profile? It is helpful for us to know more about you, so that we can better be of service and answer your questions.

    Oh my!
Maybe it is because they don't quite understand what they are downloading from your site. I just downloaded your software by the way. I am still going to have to play with it to know what all it does. That could be your reason. People are scared to download something that they aren't quite sure as to what it does. If people are coming to your site and not downloading it, then there lies your problem. You have perfectly laid out questions as to how to download your software. You do not however explain what they are downloading. My advice would be to look at competitor sites to see how they do it from their home page and maybe you need to update yours a bit to explain what it is that they are getting with your software. Put the selling points on your home page. Why do I want your software? Answer that question right on your site in bold. Try it out and see if that helps.

I agree with you that they are many services that are already available on the web, but Purplenova is different. It’s a question of choice, for e.g. You want to share your family pictures among your family and close friends, you would have to upload the pictures to a third party server, where they would be permanently archived, any one can access it from there and play with it.
Lets consider a 2nd e.g. let’s say a CEO of the company in US, is about to fly UK for a conference. He has prepared the conference details and his company related specifications lying in this PC at office. While waiting at the boarding room, it just struck him that he is not carrying that copy, but he remembers that he has privately hosted it through Purplenova, has a URL for that file, He just has to open his Notebook/PDA, put the URL in a browser and that it! The file is open in front of him.
The best part with Purplenova is that you can access your file lying in your home / office PC, from anywhere in the world, without uploading the file to any server, and files can be hosted privately (file can be viewed only by those people whom you want to show.) or publicly (accessible to the whole world).

The internet universe in coming closer and closer, with user generated content being put up every minute. If security is an issue, then tell me how secure are those external environment, which you are talking about. (Can they never crash?) Also there no question of getting access to your environment, because unless you host file all the files, how can they be accessible?

    Answer To Telemoxie
No telemoxie this isn’t a spy ware, common we are not bad guys to do all this, and we are here for some serious business by delivering value to our entire customer.
When you host a file, you get a URL. For e.g., lets say you have a file ‘jokes.doc’ which you want to share with your friends. When you host it you get a URL https://www.purplenova.net/username/jokes.doc, and when you give this URL to your friends only then they see the file. We don’t share info with any one and you can see for your self there are no ads, in the offered file.

Yes initially we did though of generating some revenue form the ads. But now we have just finalized to pull of the website and the marketing strategy and come up with a fresh one. It’s a new technology, and we have files for patents. But there are some heads that are out with similar kinds of offering like izimi, boxcloud.

A lot of time and effort has been put in to this, and it does seem working, I have now decided to revamp the whole STP (Segmentation, Marketing, and Promotion) strategy. I am completely going to change the business model and also consider of licensing out the technology to corporate, which could be a major revenue generation for us, and still offer the product for free at the website. I am going to pull out the website as well and replace with a better one, with a change in privacy policy. We are about to launch a newer version, Purplenova 3.0, with vast difference and improved functionalities. All this by the coming week, please then have a look at it and tell share our views with me. Then probably I ‘ill have success.

    Pam,
Sounds like a great idea. I agree with most of what the others have offered. You are getting the traffic but not the downloads because people do not understand what they are downloading, how to use it and many do not trust anything because of the actions of a few bad apples.

I think you are also on the right track to consider charging even a nominal fee for the service -it helps you filter out the undesirable segment of your market.

    Good Luck
