Appropriate Title

I have started a new director level job at a small start-up company. My duties are to bring the company's product into the souvenir channel through marketing and product development. The company has a Director of PD and a Design Director. I have been given carte blanche for my title.

I was wondering what would be descriptive without being too wordy (i.e. is Director of Marketing & PD, Souvenir Division too wordy?). Any input would be appreciated.

I'd go with Director of Marketing. It's clear and gives you the opportunity to take it wherever you want.

I'm just curious - is there any difference between Director of Marketing and Marketing Director?

To me job description (Marketing) is more important than job title (Director) but then again, I'm just a graphic designer :)

If I read your message correctly - the company has a Director of Product Development and a Design Director - your main goal is to advance the product (which includes marketing and product development) - ok, personally I would go with Marketing Director.

Are your duties specific to one of the company’s products, in which case Marketing Director would be too broad as that would encompass the whole company.

Hummm, I think I'll stick to designing …

    Good luck

There is another way to look at it - which is from the prospect's perspective. In other words - if I'm a potential buyer of souvenirs - what are you going to do for me - and how is this reflected in your title?

For example, "Director of Client Satisfaction" is a lousy title... but would you rather be called on by a "Director of Client Satisfaction" or by a "Director of Marketing"?

In what way will you make the lives of your prospects easier, more pleasant, and their businesses more profitable? Why should they deal with you personally... why should they deal with your company? What are you bringing to the table, from their perspective? Why should they let you in the door?

Maybe if you spend some time thinking from that perspective, it might help you to define your best role in promoting your company, which is a healthy exercise in any event... and this process might possibly suggest a title which communicates this vision, inside and outside your firm. Good luck.

I agree with mgoodman that Director of Marketing gives you the opportunity to "take it wherevery you want."

It is a fairly standard and expected title in the business world.

Non standard titles might sound catchy, creative or cute at the time, but look lousy on a resume.
