High Performing Teams

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hi there

I am undertaking some postgrad study and am currently researching for my next essay. I need to critically examine arguments for and against the statement "teams automatically perform at high levels".

I have been able to find some literature that refutes this (not much) but haven't been able to find anything that backs this statement up.

Do you have any suggestions on where I could find some resources to help both sides of the argument? Do you have any personal examples that would support either side of the argument.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Thanks
Rachel

PS - I have done a search on this site and found a couple of useful items.

Check out Ned Herrmann's books: The Creative Brain and The Whole Brain Business Book.

They are both loaded with examples of the effectiveness of teams -- provided they meet certain criteria.

Fascinating stuff, even if you don't have to do a research project on the subject.

Note that the links provided above go to a description of the book on a third-party website, with links to Amazon.com should you want to actually purchase the books.

What does this mean: "teams automatically perform at high levels"?

Higher than what? Higher than individuals? How compared? I'm sure 40,000 slaves working together could build a pyramid faster than me on my own. But that's a function of man-hours, not the team environment or some "x-Factor" that comes from the team.

So... How are you measuring this mooted higher performance? Against what benchmarks?

    In anticipation of your answer...
