Good Price For Domain Name?

Posted by BlueSage on 125 Points
I don't know which topic to put this under. I have a .com very-small-town's name. Someone has written to me asking what I am willing to sell it for, out of the blue. How do I determine the value?

    depends on the town...

Example... Luckenbach.com might be worth hundreds...
    Woodstock.com is probably worth thousands...
MorrisonvilleIL.com would be worth about 25 cents.

Early on I played some speculative games with names. How long have you had it? If you google it, what else pops up besides your site? If there is some big event happening there next year, you may have a money maker....

I wish I could be more specific...

I'm no expert, but is there a site there? Does it get any traffic...just from people typing the name?

Is the buyer someone from the city or a business person?

You could always auction the domain using any of the services. GoDaddy has one.

I've sold a couple URL's I've owned. The most I ever got was $1,500. The others just about what I had into them.

On the bigger one, I made up a story to reply to my interested party..."You know, I was saving that URL for my wife, but it seems we may not really need it after all and I might consider parting with it. What price point are you considering?"

He came back with $500 bucks. I replied that the least I would really consider was $1,500 because of this, that and the other thing, and he went for it. Did I leave money on the table...maybe, but not too much.

So I would try to get them to show you their cards before you quote a price. Like Frank says, if it's a good name, you might be able to get a decent amount. But don't try to get rich from it, or they'll let go of the hook.

I've bought domains names on behalf of clients with direct negotiations before. My client was willing to pay up to 9,000 for a specific domain, but I managed to negotiate a purchase price of only 900 dollars from the owner of the domain.

I've also been asked to sell domains for clients. When trying to determine a price, its helpful to get an appraisal. Here is a few suggestions where you can get an appraisal of a domain name's value.

    1) https://www.securepaynet.net/gdshop/dna/appraisal.asp?prog_id=customerloyal...

    2) https://sedo.com/main.php3?language=us&partnerid=28653

The folks at Sedo (second choice above) offer a brokerage service too, so you can list your domain name for sale, and they will handle all the details for you for a small fee. So, in addition to domain appraisals, you can park the domain with Sedo, list it for sale, pay a few bucks to make it a featured sale, and they will broker deals for you. Not too bad a deal.

Hope this helps you get the best value for your domain name.

It is pretty much a crap shoot in my opinion. In 2000 I sold a domain name for $25,000. That name was a strange one meetium.com. They company bought it because they changed their name to something that sounded like meetium and they were working with investor money. This was probably the only company in the world that would have been interested in that name.

Go for as much as you can get and be willing to negotiate down. You never know what they have in mind. One thing is for sure - most URLs are not worth what they were in 2000.

Thanks all. I have written to him saying 'sure, it could be for sale, what does a Florida company want with it?' I'll see what comes of it. Godaddy is a good idea. This page used to be a website, but the folks let it lapse, so I renewed it, thinking something might come of it some day. Thanks again.

I'll let yawl know if something does come of it.
