Social Networking Programs

Posted by jcasalou on 125 Points
I'm looking for software that can be used for a social networking type site. I do realize that this should ultimately be programmed internally. However in the meantime are there any software packages that can suffice?

Cheers

Try Fillmash, https://sourceforge.net/projects/fillmash/ and open source Facebook clone based on Drupal.

Popscripts MySpace Clone can be found here for $79 https://www.popscript.com/php-scripts/social-network/php-myspace-gold-editi...

You may want to try looking for freelance software developers at getafreelancer.com or odesk.com. That way you can have proprietary, customizable software for your site.

We use DotNetKnuke for our clients and it is terrific. Complete content management, modular and open source.

    Hello,

Out of the open source (FREE) solutions this is by far the best available in my opinion. I would also reccomend you check out ace-host.net as a hosting provider. They have the best pricing and one of the best systems you can find.

    Thank you,

I would be careful about anything that is an "in the meantime" solution. You need to determine exactly why you want a social networking site and what it should be accomplishing. I would also avoid anything open source unless you consider yourself to be a strong programmer. Open source doesn't have a help line or someone to customize the features for you.
Then get a pro to build you social media site for you and launch it with some fanfare.
If you go one direction with the interim solution and then change it on everyone who got involved you aren't doing yourself or them any favours.
This will ultimately take a little longer but it will be of more benefit in the long run , be more stable, and have more involvement.
If you are truly desperate good old fashioned Outlook has tools for public folders to build discussion threads and a Facebook Group that is closed to outsiders provides lots of networking and sharing options.

Plone is a cms that is perfect to set up a social networking type of site. It is easy to install and very stable and open source with a very active and professional community.

check www.plone.org for the project and https://plone.net/sites for examples of sites using Plone

There is a total separation between content and looks so if you have a website design a Plone professional can make the style sheets for you.

There are other good open source alternatives to start a social networking type of website. The availability of professional support should weight heavy in your final choice. If you are successful the question of scaling will arise and that is an operation that needs special expertise at a moment that failure is not an option.
