Just off the top of my head (and these are not hard and fast rules) but in my 20+ years working in the design field (mostly working on a mac) I have generally used the below format for:

GIF: use: web. Good file compression algorithm for large areas of flat color (ie; logo, etc.)

JPEG: use: web. Good file compression algorithm for photographic images or images with continuous tone (ie; logo, etc.)

BMP: have hardly ever used this format

PNG: use: web. being used more and more. should be investigated fully. see article below for advantages:

TIFF: use: print. When doing print work I save most of my images in the TIFF format which gives excellent results.
