Updating A Marketing Department

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hi, We are considering adding a 3rd person to our marketing department would like to find out ways to organize roles. Currently we have a VP of Marketing and myself. The 3rd person would be entry-level support. I handle all of the PR, mailings, writing, design, reporting, tracking, tradeshows, CRM, etc. Needless to say, we need an extra hand. Any information on new roles, org chart, job descriptions and what you have experienced in a small marketing department would be of help.

You should consider outsourcing your marketing rather than doing it in house. You can structure it in such a way that you can either pay by the project or on a retainer basis. It would be cheaper and you'd get a much better product.

Each department is different, so it is hard to generalize. But , given that you said entry level support, what I would do would be to look at the repetitive tasks that you and the VP have and try to hand off some to this new person. Things like how your CRM system probably has a certain amount of data entry to keep going.

Truthfully, chances are the person would more be working on things you work on than what the VP does, so you could also look for someone who has expertise in one of the areas you carry (perhaps one that you are not strong at) and have them start taking on some of those roles from you.
