Online Best Practices For Italics Treatment?

With regard to the use of italics on a Web site: unless it's a publication title or the occasional use for emphasis, italics should not be used, correct?

    You have creative license to use italics any way you see fit. Typesetting is creative expression not a book of rules.

    In general, yes, I believe you have stated it correctly. To Levon's point, rules are made to be broken... but I always say you have to know the rules before you can break them. :) Most often, I would avoid italics except as you state, but there could be cases where it's part of the design you're going for.

    Italics are meant for titles and to emphacise something. It is generally something you want to emphasize less than bold and more than just regular text. It can also be used for titles.
