Idea Tagging Tools Needed

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
I need a tool to store ideas.

This tool:

- Should be available online for 24/7 access
- Is preferably web browser based for accessibility on a range of devices
- Would act as a dump for my ideas, both big and small
- Allows me to tag my ideas, with a selection of keywords
- Will allow me to search through my ideas via these tags
- Must be private
- Would, if possible, also allow tagging of URLS or could be patched into del.ic.ious

To summarise: Ideas would probably only be Twitter-sized statements that can be categorised according to ongoing projects names, or the general topic - eg trade shows, newsletters etc. The attractive part of a solution like this would be the ability to click on a tag in a cloud and see all of the ideas relating to it.

It should have the capability to add updates to ideas when necessary.

Suggestions very welcome! Many thanks

It sounds like some mind-mapping software may be a good fit. Here are some web-based options: https://www.mindomo.com/, https://www.mind42.com/, or https://www.mindmeister.com/

It's also possible that Google Docs (https://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/tour.html) may also be a good fit for you.

    Thanks for your response Jay.

I should perhaps have mentioned - I'm not overly keen on mind maps, because many of my ideas will be only very loosely connected.

Tagging allows me to group my thoughts in a far more general way, whereas to achieve the same thing with a mind map I would require several different maps, which could not interlink... unless of course I am mistaken :)

Some methods of tagging would also, presumably, allow me to see (at a glance from one page) a visual comparison of the number of ideas I have labelled under each tag - by changing the size of each tag within the cloud, for example. I'd find this particularly valuable.

A google docs spreadsheet could work OK for me, although ideally I'd need something far simpler for mobile use.

Once again, thanks for your input Jay.

A blog should provide all this functionality -- standard tools like Blogger, Tyepad, Vox... these allow tagging, twitter, privacy control, delicious, photo upload, etc.

They also allow you to store a library of books, photos, audio... should be more than enough functionality.

NVivo 8 is good for tagging multimedia files. It might work for free-form idea tagging too.

    Thanks for the suggestions all.
I think a private blog might be the best way to go.

Will leave this question open for a couple more days, suggestions are still very welcome!
