Research On Home Impr / Landscape Contractors

Posted by cl98 on 250 Points
I'd welcome any and all research on landscape/ home improvement contractors.
I'm looking for any insights -- demographic, psychographic, enthnographic, segmentation, etc -- on contractors: particularly landscape, home improvement, masonry, hardscaping, and pool.
Of particular interest is the understanding of a Contractor's "Day in the life", including their potential online usage and other media consumption patterns (internet, radio, tv, mobile, etc) along with brand loyalty, referral behavior, etc. Anything and everything!

I recently did a business plan for a similar business.

There are some emerging markets that are great niches. Homeowners are being less traditional-- there are more minority home owners, and more single homeowners. People are becoming homeowners sooner than in previous generations. And baby boomers are cash rich, buy what they want vs decisions only on price. Baby boomers will be making many modifications to their homes as they age-- and attempt to live independently.

Why don't you pose some thought-out questions on Contractor discussion boards. You might be surprised at the number and the quality of response that you get.
I just did a quick Google search and came up with these forums:

I suspect that even if you focus on a specific type of contractor, in a specific geographic area, you'll likely have a wide range of behaviors. However, licensed contracts will belong to organizations, guilds, etc.

I'd continue your research by talking with organizations such as: www.apld.org and www.apsp.org and www.ipssa.com They may already have white papers or completed surveys available.
