How Can I Promote Comedy Sketches To Networks?

I am writing some quite funny comedy sketches, and will be producing and directing them with a team later this month. Now, I know that many people post them online to social portals such as YouTube and MySpace, but I would like to shop them around to networks, hopefully to be picked up for their programming. I know this is not an easy chore, but I would like any and all input on this topic.

    Based on my limited understanding of how that industry works, it just doesn't happen that way. Ever.

    Moreover, you would not be shopping your sketches to the networks. Rather, you'd be shopping them to the companies that produce the shows for the networks.

    Also, it sounds like you're suggesting that you're actually going to produce the sketches which would then be bought and shown on an existing television show. I can't see that happening.

    Of course, we live in a different world than we did 10 or 20 years ago, so maybe things move differently nowadays.

    I could see you posting someone of your work on the Web and then, assuming it's very, very good with a rabid fan base, someone contacting you to say that they'd like to talk about working with you...but that's about it.

    I look forward to hearing from others who have more recent experience with this stuff. It's interesting.

    For what it's worth, I once worked on pitching a script idea for Seinfeld. Talk about impossible!

    Hello,
    Although I don't have much experience working directly with the networks, I do have a significant amount of experience in strategic and social/online marketing, and the doors that seem to automatically open for you once you prove you can capture an audience.

    Therefore, my suggestion would be to develop your skits, put them into production and promote them on every social networking site that makes sense (in addition to YouTube and MySpace, there are literally hundreds of other viral and social bookmarking sites that will allow you to generate exposure).

    Then allow the audience to work for you - if they like what you have to offer, they will spread the message for you. Be sure to track all incoming links to your video, the amount of traffic, shares, etc. Compile this information and (if the networks haven't already found you on their own at this point), show them your results in a concise package. Include the audience numbers, results of the viral campaign, and comments or postings that will help you prove your point.

    And don't be afraid of others launching copycat campaigns - since yours is the first (and I assume best) material, the copycats will only serve to drive MORE traffic to you.
