Ideas To Start Graphic Design Firm

I am having a hard time contacting firms for design projects. I was wondering if you have some ideas on getting projects so that I can start a small business.

    Getting projects is the hardest part of starting any business. you need to become very good at telling people why you are a better alternative. Start you business part time if possible to develop some projects that you can use as a portfolio.

    I have done projects for a couple of firms and am trying to put an online portfolio but how do I contact firms to give me projects? Does just showing up work? I don't think calling is a good idea, may be emailing art directors of design firms...

    I am having similar problems. I have started a small web design and graphic design business. I am struggling to reach people who would want my services. I rely highly on word of mouth. How do we get to the right people? How do we know who needs what we do? HELP!

    Work for design companies (either part- or full-time). Companies aren't likely to entrust their clients' work to an unknown. They'll want to see a legacy of successful results. By working for a design company, you'll learn more about business, presentations, pricing, service and develop great networks. When you're ready to strike out on your own, you'll have a strong portfolio and a number of past clients to contact (depending on your non-compete clause).

    The best thing that I can think of, as I am getting into the graphic design business myself, is to sign up with as many freelance designers directories as you can. Browse the FAQ's, forums, and articles for tips and how-to's. Directories to start with are:

    Partner with companies that offer services that complement yours (a printer, a marketing writer, etc.).

    I would recommend checking out Jeff Fisher's blog at www.blogomotives.com. He's a very talented identity designer and shares lots of great information about the graphic design business, marketing your services, etc.
