How To Increase Magazine Subscribers' Base

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have to increase the number of subscribers to our magazine addressed to people interested in healthy diet (especially raw diet and vegans) and holistic green lifestyle.
The database is steadily growing, readership loves it but we are still quite small.
We sell hard copies and e-mags (all back copies will be available online soon), we have free mag download on our site, excerpts of articles, we participate in major raw events, run PPC campaign and will do a recommend a friend scheme. We are also planning on advertising through facebook and web groups, I can network with vegan sport clubs too. Magazine is also promoted in company's monthly newsletters. This is not our only product, we are mainly an online business selling healthy raw foods.

I'd also include green building groups. Including niches like straw bale house groups. You have a good but very small niche. I ate raw for about a year, and while it was the best I ever felt-- its difficult to maintain. I took a few classes and because I'm on the mail list-- get a few emails a year from travelers asking if I know someone who can deliver food.

Consider teaming up with advertisers. Offer free coupons in your magazine to products that your readers would use. A free subscription to something that saves them money is a no-brainer.

I also wonder about your website: if you're doing all the work you're saying, are you not getting the traffic or not getting the conversions. If the traffic is low, then you need to focus on your SEO effort. However, if conversions are low, first make your site's content and call to action to subscribe stronger (do this before you improve SEO). Simply having more people visit your site that don't opt-in won't benefit you.

Sounds to me like you are doing a fantastic job already :))

Well done. Building any kind of magazine subscription just takes time.

Take a look at the international markets - is the mad available only in English? If so you have UK, Australia, India, most SE Asia countries, (Singapore HK especially).

The truth is that some products like this just grow slowly - there is no magic wand, You do the maximum that can be done but in the end the audience will decide its level of interest.

The good news is that because you have a highly focussed niche market - they tend to be very loyal and very active. This is a highly desirable thing to have over a big audience who does not get involved.

    Good luck.

OLA64 -- Many vegans/vegetarians are animal lovers so perhaps you can team with animal welfare or humane associations on a discount coupon or event.

    Good luck.

Try offering free trails to your magazine and use targeted campaigns that offer only that.

Use niche social bookmarking sites to share articles with people who would be interested in reading them. Link back to your site, allowing them to read the full article.

Have a call to action on each page of your site to encourage people to subscribe to your publication.

Spend some money on a Keyword Research report that will tell you how to connect with your target audience through search. Do more people search for raw foods or healthy foods? What channels can you add to your website to reach more people through natural or organic search?

Consider doing a "free" smaller publication as a teaser. Display it at Trader Joe's or other stores your target audience would go to.

You could buy a list of names and addresses from a lead company and send your target audience a free publication with a strong call to action to get them to subscribe.

Thanks for opportunity to share my thoughts.
