Marketing To Ip Address Locations

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
To give you a brief overview: we are an executive relocation firm that targets Corporate Relocation Managers and HR Professionals.

Recently I was able to secure a listing of IP address locations of visitors to our site. The list includes # of visitors, page views etc. linked back to various company's worldwide. A majority of these are clients of ours, however, there are several company's whose employees are navigating our site from the workplace.

Any suggestions on how I can use this data?

You can use it for a geographical breakdown and perhaps target your campaigns to those regions on and offline.

Place "IP Lookup" into Google -- there are plenty of free resources.

If you have (or add) Google Analytics, you'll get geographic location, network connection, etc. However, the data won't match up with specific IP addresses. And, in any case, you can't market directly (via email) to those people anyway (it's spam).

Instead, use the geographic data to focus your other marketing efforts or for general demographic information on where your visitors are coming from.

You can use many resources to get the geopgraphic location of an ip address: Here is one I found in Google: https://www.geobytes.com/ipLocator.htm.

This information will mostly be enlightening, but not necessarily useable. Do you have a place on your site that allows users to subscribe to a newsletter. If you produce some pointers or hits that people need to give an email to get, you might be able to capture who some of these surfers are. This way they have given you permission for you to send them inforamtion. If you create a newsletter subscription, keep it simple. Name, Company, email and title/position should be suffficient.

Develop a newsletter and send it to your company contacts from which you are getting a lot of IP hits, with an easy way to "forward to a friend" so that they can forward it to their employees. This may give your newsletter added credibility since it is informally "endorsed" by the company. Be sure to include some information that the employee would need to know when relocating, so that your newsletter is seen as a valuable resource. They will probably be more likely to use you once they get the sense that you are a purveyor of information that has genuine value to them.

You can put yourself into a pickle. If you approach a company whose employees are reading your site, it may be because people are thinking of quitting their job and are doing their homework before they quit. Or, an HR person may be looking for your services for people they are in the process of hiring. You don't know.

Provide a reason for someone to contact you directly (either via phone, fax, or email). Perhaps a special offer, a 10 top tips for making employee relocations problem-free article, ways to save money in relocating tips, etc. Next, continue the dialog with them.
