Tips For Building A Tourism Portal

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Dear everyone.
Me and a good business partner/friend of mine have for long been going around getting irritated about a certain SEA country's bad marketing stunts. So we decided that with my ideas and her contacts in high places in her country, we should try planning and building a tourism portal, which could give all the good information needed, to make a webb founded decision to go there.
Now out problem is - we have lots of ideas, but none of has has actually BUILT a web portal before. I have put together some CMS systems before, and she has long experience within tourism, but .... we felt asking for help might not be such a bad idea :)

the portal will have its CMS system ( joomla based) as its foundation, then with links to an integrated booking system by webresint.com or asiahotels.com, a forum, a gallery and destination guide.

My question to you guys is
- if you were to build a tourism portal which cater to the entire planet... what are your top 5 includes you would bring in to the project? ..

its a free for all help me guide :P

Activities - What can people do there?
Accomodations - All the possiblities of places to stay
    Modes of Travel
    Images of Destinations
Destination Highlights - rotate some descriptions of some of the great destinations
A comment section for visitors, knid of like tripadvisor.com

All these things need to be very interconnected, i.e. the activities should be intertwined with accomodations.

I have done a few Joomla based sites and have used www.Rockettheme.com for templates. They are very well designed and farily easy to modify (change colors, fonts and functionality). I would highly reccomend checking them out. If you check them out know that the demos are usually showing all modules active and most pages you have would not be nearly so busy.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    I would suggest:
    - some kind of recommendation tool for people who are interested in different aspects of your destination (culture, sports, ... etc.) so they'll know which city is best suited for them
    - 360° images gallery
    - FAQ
    - information on tourist traps/warnings
    - city walking tours
    - maps both in pdf and adapted for mobile phones
