Working For Two Bosses

Posted by rum68br on 125 Points
Hello everyone

I have a problem with office politics. I am working for one boss but all work needs to be approved by another worker to see if it conforms to the guideline governing us.

The problem is that my boss is not telling ,y co-worker everything and is never around in the office to take the flak, which is left to me. I love the job and the people i work with, but being acting a go between is causing a problem as I dont want to be seen as siding with a co-worker over my boss.

Any advise would be great and very helpful

Unless you have have regular face-to-face meetings, ask your boss/co-worker to keep communications via email. It'll increase clarity and reduce miscommunication.

I would suggest all email communications be cc'd to all involved that way everyone is on the same page. Always offer clarity as well, i.e. "My understanding of this task is..." that way the guy that approves everything understands that the boss that assigns everything wanted you to do a task in this specific way.

Communication is key, and there seems to be a break down here. I travel and so does my boss, but we keep in touch via email daily. Anybody and everybody involved in a project gets CC'ed in on any emails between us, so that everybody is up to date on each subject, policies, procedures and new information. Everybody being on the same page is a very valuable tool in the workplace. This way everything is documented too, all instructions and conversations. I keep folders with co-worker's names in my email and all emails I receive do not get deleted, they get put in the folders.

Also, it may be wise to tell your boss your concerns about communication and get him/her to work with you a bit more with communicating to Y co-worker.

write it write it write it write it.

Whether e-mail or paper. Make sure the criticism is also in that format.

You problem will either solve itself or you'll have the assigment removed from your plate. Either way you win.
