Trade Show Promotions

Need some ideas for great trade show promotions. Our client in the packaging market gives away product samples and freebies (e.g. pens,etc), but would like to take to a higher level. Pre-show, at-show? post-show? Erring toward a lower budget...
what great promos have you seen or done?

    In one (or more) of your barrel pens, replace the ink cartridge with a prize certificate rolled up. Place thousands of pens in a tank, and let people pick a pen to win the bigger prize AFTER you get their contact information.

    If you are giving away something, make it directly related to your clients product. Can you think of something that could be packaged in a cool way by your client? The more examples you can give of what they do the better. I have lots of free pens and do not think I have ever called anyone because I read it on a pen.

    The other reason to make it drirectly related to packaging is that you will tend to only attract those interested in packaging which is the point. You do not wnat to waste time with those that are not serious and miss the meaningful conversation with someone who is serious. This is the big trick, not just getting people to stop at the booth, but getting the right people.
