Ethnicity Vs Race/creating A Market Survey

Solving an office debate :)
When surveying your target audience( or when you yourself are completing a survey)...what is more proper --asking what is one's race or ethnicity? Or both. Does one provide tend to be more useful and provide more insight into your target audience?

    Use both terms (race/ethnicity)

    I, personally, am more frustrated than offended by the question. I see people, I don't see color.

    If I'm not mistaken, ethnicity is a more politically correct term. Hope it helps!

    It depends on what you want to know.

    Race is (in the US) mostly about your physical traits.
    Ethnicity is mostly about your ancestry and social group.

    Thanks everyone... I agree, it does depend on what you need to uncover and for my project ethnicity would be more appropriate-- I do feel that race is becoming an increasingly antiquated and unsupportive term.
