Who Would Be Better For Sme's - Obama Or Mccain

Posted by Lorenz Lammens on 250 Points
Hi all,

I'm not asking for party lines or ideologies, but cold hard facts. How do you think SME's will be affected under either President?

Thanks.

I don;t have any facts other than my own personal experience and those of my clients. Historically, the Republicans have been a much more business friendly party that the left leaning Democrates. Let the debate begin!

    Hi Darcy,

any specific examples? I am from the UK and new to American politics and business. I am interested in learning more about the experience of American business owners.

Well, the collapse of sub-prime mortgages is one such example. President Clinton (Democrate) changed the rules in which mortgages were issued by lending institutions. Suddenly, folks with NO income and NO jobs could qualify for a mortgage. These mortgages were bunbdled in with other mortgages and sold. When those mortgages started to default and make investing in mortgage backed securities unstable, it dragged down a lot of companies. Worse yet, companies that wished to be prudent with their lending were often exposed to lawsuits because they had not taken on enough high risk mortgages, effectively catching the mortgage industry in a perilous catch-22 situtation.

Looking at how President Bush (Republican) is trying to rectify the situation by buying shares in the company (as opposed to an outright gift of a trillion dollars) and perhaps recouping some of that trillion dollars in increased share prices. I feel that Bush is at least trying to apply rational business sense (profit is not a dirty word) in resolving the situation.

I married into 'Saskatchewan Royalty' when I married my wife, she is the great grand daughter of one of the signatories to the Regina Manifesto. I've been exposed to mush more socialism and 'new democratic' beliefs and policies through my wife's family, yet, I have managed to maintain my raging capitalistic beliefs (YES, opposites DO attract). Because of my unique relationship with my wife, and being so close to the founders of the Canadian socialist movement, I think I have a very unque position to draw inferences and conclusions from the DEmocratic and Republicans just south of me in the USA.

Many of my Republican clients are business owners, and I know very FEW Democrates who own businesses. This might sound very cliche, but when I look south I see many Democrates in artsy fartsy positions, or occupying civic, state and federal government offices, and so many replicans are more 'free enterprise'. I'd challenge you to go to a gallery opening or hang out at some of the lunch shops along Wall street. In short order, you'd see what I mean. I see the lines drawn as

    Republican = capitalist
Democrate = socialist or left leaning.

One of the best videos I've ever seen explaining the differences is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFC5OYU4Lyo

    My two cents. Rave on!

There are many reasons to show that both sides plan to make changes that could hurt small business.

For example, Senator Obama plans to raise taxes for individuals and small business owners who make over $200,000 per year. Even if, as the Obama group claims, the group impacted by this increase is "only several thousand", (which according to sources on his side, is approximately 663,608 taxpayers) that's a lot of business owners who will be tightening their belts. The increase may necessitate laying off workers in order to cover the tax bill.

The new tax rate would be the highest since the Carter Administration, when America suffered through double-digit inflation and unemployment.

Under McCain's tax bill, corporations would get tax cuts, which would help keep jobs in America. It also widens the gap between the highest earners and the lowest.

Senator Obama's health care reform could hurt small business by requiring that employers either pay for health insurance for their employees, or cover a portion of their health care costs. He would also require that insurance companies provide more coverage, which will increase the cost of coverage, not reduce it as he claims. What this means is more costs to the employer, which could cause a reduction in the work force.

McCain's plan to make the insurance market more competitive will actually make things worse for individuals and business owners as groups become more fractionalized, driving up premiums.

In truth, neither candidate's solution for health care is a truly universal solution.

There are many more issues that impact small business. The bottom line is that each one proposes some changes to help business, along with other proposed changes that will hurt them.
