Suggestions For College Website

Posted by rimagico on 250 Points
A friend who has a student in college has created a little website which provides tips for parents of college students. CollegeTipsForParents.org

He asked me for suggestions for improving the site.
It obviously needs a serious make-over.
There are some good content articles in the site, however I would like your input and suggestions on:

-Marketing strategies to boost viewership
-Strategies to help the site generate revenue.
-Site design suggestions.
-Any other ideas or suggestions.

actually i would give it an 8. The only thing that needs to be improved is the availability of content.

I would preview some of the content on the landing page.

From a design perspective: White text on a yellow background is hard to read. The font sizes can be more consistent as well.

The copy could be boosted. Instead of "this website features...", come right out and use a headline such as, "Are Your Children (Soon To Be) In College?".

Have your blog seamlessly connect to your website. In this case, I'd suggest turning the entire website into a blogsite, using Wordpress to handle both the blog and static pages. The bonus is you'll get a RSS feed for the home page, which is useful as parents subscribe to the site.

As Frank suggestions, feature a video / article tip on the home page.

I agree with the above.. The look is fine though I would cut the chase on the landing page with contentas Frank and Jay suggested. Perhaps divided by categories. Also, I would unbold the text. It makes it easier to read and then you can use bold for highlight specific important words.

In regards to marketing and SEOs strategies you can push the website through the college informational material at open days and and at parents days. From an online point of view instead, I would not use Wordpress or any other blog site. They do not achieve ranking status by search engines. Instead, build the blog inside the website. And of course, if the college has its own website, have a link to your website.

    Best luck.

I too am not fond of the white text on the yellow. This may be hard for the older eyes (parents of college students). The more contrast between the text and and background the better.

The front page is not very catchy with just the text. Perhaps some images that support the content would make it a little more lively.

As mentioned above perhaps some little teasers of the content that you provide. In this fast paced world, you only have a few seconds to capture the visitor attention.

If you haven't done so (it didn't look like it) add Google Analytics so you can see what pages people make it to. If all the visitors are leaving the first page you know you need to make some changes.

In terms of revenue you can be an affiliate with amazon and sell books that would be related to the topics of the articles. Unfortunately, for other advertising you will need to work on building qualitiy visits before you worry about advertising.

It doesn't appear that your site has any meta tags. the meta tag description is a great thing to add as this is what Google uses in the description of the search results. This gives you a little more control of what people see when they search.

As always content is king so be sure to keep adding new content and give people a good reason to return. Perhaps you can create a newsletter that sends teasers and gets people to visit the site for new information.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike
