Do Travel Incentives Motivate Sales Reps?

Posted by zact on 250 Points
We are thinking of instituting a sales incentive to our outside sales force which would be travel based. Two airline tickets and hotel stay somewhere. NOT a company sponsored event with coworkers. Has anyone used a simple method like this before?
Also our HQ staff would work their region while they are away.

In the past, I've been a part of a sales staff that used travel-based incentives. Some people (like me, for instance) thought they were great. Others didn't care.

The best way to find out what motivates your staff is to ask them.

It really depends on the profile of your target audience. If they travel all the time for work, the travel incentive probably won't be terribly motivating. If they're mostly in one location, then the chance to get away might be very motivating.

We've seen travel incentives work ... and we've seen them not work so well. The best one was the promise of "dinner for two 6 time zones away, in the city of your choice ... all expenses paid for a week."

    Good luck with this.

Are your sales people constantly travelling? If so travelling might not be their favorite thing to do.

I would really ask your sales staff what they would like. Often times people would like more time off to spend with their family. I am sure your people will have many great ideas.

Thanks for the input. We were going to use the travel incentive simply because it is at no cost to the company. It is helpful to think in terms of the end user (as it were).
