Cloud Hosting

Posted by lstevens on 250 Points
Does anyone have any experience with "Cloud Hosting"? Is it reliable and stable? We currently out-source hosting for more than 60 websites on two virtual servers. I was just checking out prices with providers as we are about to go into re-negotiations with our hosting provider. The prices I'm seeing for 500 GB of space in a cloud hosting system are astoundingly good. Before we make a move I would like to know what's the down side?

I'm aware of "Cloud Processing", but this is a fairly new concept in hosting that was launched in February 2008. Here is the provider I'm looking at: https://www.mosso.com/

They specifically call it "Cloud Hosting." I'm not an IT person, so I'm doing my best to understand what they offer. I contacted Rack Space about hosting and they pointed me to their subsidiary, Mosso.

We are currently contracted for 5 GB between two virtual servers, one Linux and one Windows box. We are only using about 3 GB of the space. As far as bandwidth, I don't have those stats. We do not offer ecommerce right now, but we want to plan for that eventuality, which will mean adding static IPs and security certificates. (I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about here!)

The hosting provider we built our service with recently sold out to another company. While the new company is bigger and has the infrastructure to be more stable, we've had a few hiccups. The Chairman of our Board of Directors recommended Rack Space, and this cloud hosting is a new service they offer. I've heard of cloud computing, but not cloud hosting and there isn't much information on the concept out there that is easily accessible to an IT outsider.

Talk to some of their existing clients for their experiences about responsiveness and uptime.
