Starting a virtual assistant business will require that you market your services to prospective clients, and that's not free. In fact, it will probably require a few thousand dollars if you're starting from scratch.

How would people even know you're available and qualified? You'd have to advertise (somehow) to communicate your positioning and your offer. And you might have to rent a list of target customers ... either email or snail-mail names/addresses. Etc.

Any service business will require little or no inventory, but don't underestimate the marketing requirement or you'll find that nobody knows you're in business.

Designers, accountants, architects, marketing consultants, programmers -- these all can be done from home.

Most WFH businesses that you can buy into are the ones people get into just for the money. The promises are usually huge, and the return is pitiful.

The best job or WFH business is one that you start, that is based on your strengths and interests. What do you like? How would you like to spend your time?
