Creative Running Event

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I'm working with a health promotions startup and was asked to organize a running event to help build brand awareness. I would like to organize a non-traditional event and have participants compete with each other over a span of 3 weeks+. The idea being to encourage healthy living. But I'm wondering how I might manage and judge the competitors. I would love to hear some ideas about the criteria I should have to determine a winner(s).

You could have people keep a mileage journal and give prizes for various goals: most miles, improvement of miles over the weeks, consistency, getting others involved, etc. You could even add to that some weight loss goals or something of the sort, but 3 weeks is probably not enough time for that.

    Sponsor with Nike/Apple (https://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/).
As for what to judge - it depends on what you want to reward: age, distance, speed, time, heart rate, wt loss, etc.

This is something the Nike + running chip/website is good for, but in order for that to work all your participants need to have a Nike + chip and wristband.

A low-tech way would be to give out pedometers and access to an online recording system.

Award prizes for most steps taken in a single day, single week and total steps taken.

You'll be relying on the honour system, but it's an inexpensive way to get people to compete and get exercising.

    Best of luck.
