Info Re Pricing Banner Ads On Subscription Site

Posted by Markitek on 750 Points
I'm near launch of a subscription site and am now delving into what rate(s) to charge for advertising on the site . . . really know little about structure of that so any advice would be helpful. Am interested in specific info that would apply to my particular site from folks who are in the game. (Please don't take this wrong, but I'm capable of finding all the general info I want).

The site is coachlearn.com.

If you go there you'll encounter only basic info for non subscribers. Feel free to email me at [email address deleted by staff] and I'll open up a subscriber account for you so you can see what we're up to in depth. I'd post one here but if one of you were on and another logged in, the first one would be logged out.

Would also of course appreciate any/all thoughts on the site itself from those who log in.

Many thanks

I would re-consider having banner ads on a subscription site. I would think paying for a subscription would get me out of having to look at ads.

Are you only doing ads for the public portion or for users that are logged in.

A quick comment about the site. I was confused right off the bat as I do not know if I am at "The Coaching Institute", "Terri Levine's Coach's Refource Center" or "Markitek - Community Site's with Muscle". There are too many competing things happening in the header. I would simplify that to make a clearer message. If you are the web designer "Markitek" and this is a client site, I would not put your info first. The footer would be a more appropriate place.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

A subscriber will care about how many unique visitors you get, where they come from, if they buy from you, their demographics, etc. The more information you have, the more valuable your visitors potentially are to advertisers. To get some of this information, you'll need to install web analytics (such as: https://www.google.com/analytics/).

As for the value of an ad, it depends on how much you can show how targeted your visitors are and how willing they are to spend $ (and how much).

    Thanks for responses so far

Mikee . . . we disagree, I think, on the ad issue. My POV is that ads are not inherently an annoyance but rather a way of communicating something of value (although they become annoyances of course). If, for instance, I'm publishing a magazine (on or off line) for building contractors, then ads about tools, materials, sub contractors are good things not annoyances.

Along those lines, I also disagree that paid circulation publications shouldn't advertise . . . again on the premise that ads are respectable and effective vehicles for providing valuable info. That contractors' book, controlled or not, could very easily have ads.

    Many thanks for your response.

You began your response with "A subscriber will care about how many unique visitors you get, where they come from, if they buy from you, their demographics, etc." Did you mean "An advertiser will care . . . " If not, I'd be interested in the topic of subscribers caring about visitor stats.

I certainly agree that readership and buying habits impact ad rates. Would you have, or can you point me to, models that might provide some direction?

Thanks for your response as well
