Charge For Creating A Logo

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
I think I'm being overcharged for a logo and need to get some feedback from the group.

I had a friend of mine who is a budding graphic designer (no formal work experience) work on a logo for a company I'm involved with. He created a nice logo for us, went through some revisions, some back and forth and had quick turnaround everytime.

We never discussed price but I did offer to pay him for his time. I was working under a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" impression, thinking he would benefit from the experience and I would get a good deal. He's got about 15 hours into this project and I told him to decide if he wants to charge hourly or on a project basis and give me a price.

I just received an email saying he's set his hourly rate at $30 and will be charging $500 for the logo and another small project I had him do. I think this is ridicously overpriced for someone with limited experience and for a logo that is mostly text with one grapic and in b&w. Am I wrong in thinking this is wayyyyyyy too much money? What's the average charge for creating a logo and/or new designers??

Any input would be appreciated.

    Nadia,

The questions I have for you is this:

    1) If you ignore the cost aspect, are you satisfied with the results?
    2) Do you think you could have gotten similar results more cheaply?

For good logo work, combined with multiple reviews, $600 is common. $30 per hour is a bargain. Most graphics people I know are $45 or $60.

If the results are amateurish and fail to meet your needs, then at any price, you were overcharged.

I have learned this lesson before. Settle on price up front. And friends are friends outside the office, but business is business. The two don't mix well unless you can set up business guidelines.

    I hope this helps.

Extract: An individual or small company with small to average uses should be prepared to pay anywhere from $300 to $1500 for a top quality, professional logo design.

Who cares about experience if you're happy with the result?

Written agreements are critical ESPECIALLY with friends (or family).

Thanks for all the input, I do appreciate it.

Yes, I'm happy with the end result. I'm not happy with the experience or sticker shock, especially when I had asked for pricing initially and was told "I don't know, what do you think is fair?". I do realize I am at fault for not pushing him to set a price in the beginning and working under the assumption of doing each other a favor. I will not make that mistake again!

It may not seem like a lot of money or a fair deal when you are used to dealing with big companies, but to a struggling small business, it is.

Thanks again for all the input!
