Company History - 40 Year Anniversary Book

Posted by Marita on 250 Points
I work for a very successful engineering firm that has been in business since 1972. We are best known for the quality of our work, our innovation and commitment to what we do, not too sound so mainstream but it is the truth. One of our retired owners has been writing the story of the company and wanted all key senior engineers to write about past project involvement while they are all still around. I thought it would be a great idea to create a book for our 40 year anniversary. Most of our new engineers do not know the story of our company and I think it is worth telling it. However, there are key close minded senior engineers that oppose to the idea. I need your opinion on why would you oppose, and why you would think it is a good initiative. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Think about how some people would give anything to appear on "American Idol"

Consider the fact that there are people at the other end of the spectrum (like myself), who are repulsed by the idea of attaining any measure of fame. This may be one of the reasons some engineers don't like the idea of being included in a book.

You might have to convince them of the good use of the book. For example: You could send a copy of the book to any customer that had a major mention. Companies like to keep these in their lobby.

The only thing I can think of is that the feel it would be arrogant. They're not marketing people and don't see the revenue-generating uses for the book.

I'd oppose it if: I was embarrassed by the work, didn't want the recognition, or thought it was a self-congratulatory project that doesn't have any real value.

I'd be in favor it it if: I had pride in my work, I saw that my story would inspire others, or was a project that could help my company's bottom-line.

What is the purpose of the book? To celebrate individual stories at the company? To celebrate the company itself (we've been in business 40 years, hooray!)? Is it focused internally (just for the company) or externally? If it's internal, it might boost morale or strengthen the bonds between employees. If it's external, what about the book would be of interest to outsiders?

You said the retired owner "wanted all key senior engineers to write about past project involvement".
I can tell you from experience that engineers don't have time to write about ancient history. They want to work on what they're supposed to be developing, not writing.

Of course, it would be a great PR piece promoting the company. You might be able to interview the engineers or talk to them over food and drinks. Then, write it yourself.
