Mktg Degree More Valuable Than A General Bus Deg?

Posted by jcross on 250 Points
I am an Instructor at a 2-year Technical College. Our administration is looking to eliminate our 2 year Associate Degree in Marketing and replace it with a 2 year Business Degree with a "marketing track". Instructors argue that there is value in having students earn an actual marketing degree - our students get interviews because they have a marketing degree - it will be harder for students to compete against a 4-year university grad if they only have a general business degree. What do you think? What evidence would support the need for an Associate Degree in Marketing? In the job market? For University Transfer? Career advancement? Other? Thanks for your help.

obviously there is more credibility in two years of concentrated education in a single subject like marketing than there would be in a the much broader subject of general business.

Do what is practical, stick with a 2 year marketing degree.

Our clients are big, but we're relatively small. But if I was hiring, it wouldn't be primarily about the degree.

I would rather have a marketing person who understands business that a pure marketer. When companies think about cutting expenses they traditionally cut sales and marketing. Big mistake. But, if my new hire can speak the language of the business owner...she's going to be much more valuable to me.

Thanks for your input. I was really looking for specific evidence (i.e. case study, research, etc) that would support the need for an Associate Degree in Marketing rather than general comments.
