    I generally agree with Randall.

I would also re-phrase the question:

How do I further "qualify" marketing director prospects during a phone call.

I would just ask why they wanted the position and why would they be a good hire. You should know if you want to meet in person.

I have done this in the past and it does save some time. But also, when in doubt, I would have the in-person meeting.

Here is a way that you can find out exactly what the person can do if hired, instead of how good they are at interviewing:

Before the face-to-face interview, send them a summary of the company's current position as well as what you would like to see happen with the company. Ask the candidate to come to the interview with a marketing plan for getting the company where it wants to go. You'll be able to see what they really bring to the table before you hire them. We did this exact thing with three candidates for a position. They all knew that we were looking at three people and whoever brought the best plan was going to get hired. They really did their homework and the person hired was able to hit the ground running with a solid plan.

These days, candidates are going to extraordinary measures to get hired as employers have a lot of leverage. Use it to your advantage.

Thanks Velocity, I thought of that, but did not put it on paper for the candidates, which is what i will do at this point.
