Setting Up Mktg Function- Policies & Procedures?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi there, I'm new to the website but was really encouraged by all the advice everyone posted. I'm hoping some of you can help me... I'm a recent (mature!) marketing graduate and have an internal interview for a job which entails setting up a new marketing function in my company: a medium sized, educational publishers. One of the initial requirements is to establish policies and procedures. I REALLY want the job, but in prepping for the interview, I'm getting bogged down in trying to figure out where I'd start in setting up these p & ps, more specifically the content. Can anyone advise? I'd really appreciate any pointers. Thanks, Puzz

Such a broad topic to cover! One of the areas that you might particularly want to create some policies and procedures around is social networking, which in your market is something you should definitely pursue. You might need policies in place as to:

    - Do you encourage blogging from within the company (individual blogs or company blogs)
    - Will blog postings need preapproval (I'd suggest not, but if not, you need policies to guide postings)
    - What kinds of content are appropriate.
-Same sets of questions for twitter, facebook groups, etc -- who can contribute, who should contribute, etc.

In general, in these types of situations, it is best for marketing to encourage broad participation and provide general guidelines (if you're publicly-traded, don't blog about anything during quiet periods or forward-looking things.. Don't blog about products before they're released ... Don't openly bad-mouth competitors, whatever....)

I suspect that they won't expect you to have an entire department manual in place in the interview, but to show depth of thought along one area...

    Good luck

I would also add some strategic procedures around product launch -- whether these are books or websites or anything else. Who is involved when you launch products, how does the team work together to research the need for the product in the marketplace, develop the product, name it and brand it, launch the product, and develop the communications plan? How is collateral developed? How are websites created or updated?
    Hope that helps!
