To me strategic positioning is the most basic form of positioning. In strategic positioning the marketing manager discovers what the perceptions are in the competitive landscape, and then uses this information in a creative way to modify these perception to a given brand's advantage.

For example,

Avis
We're number 2, We try harder

The strategic positioning was to claim the number 2 position because the perception in the marketplace would accept such a claim.

The customer benefit from the positioning is that Avis would try harder to make the customer experience the best in the industry.

Position followed by benefit.
