Sales Rep. For Architectural Finishes - Commission

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am planning to become a sales representative for architectural finishes. I am familiar with trends, color schemes, material bids, budgets, etc. since I am an architect but I have never been involved on the marketing/sales side of the products that we use.

What is the commission for an independent sales representative of materials like tile, carpet, wallpaper, etc.?

    It's whatever you negotiate.

Start with 10% of the gross. That's pretty standard. If you're selling in an industry that has repeat buyers (we do this for some companies) then you want more like 15% and then 10% on future sales.

If it's high end, look for a flat rate. $100 or $500. If it's really high price $100K + then you might consider a percentage of profit...but only if you can be involved in pricing. If you do, make certain you know exactly what goes into "cost". I've had business owners buy new cars adn then say it was part of the cost...and then reduced our commission.

You're welcome to contact me directly if you want.
