Marketing And Communications

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Recently a "Communications Consultant" has convinced the president of a company that I freelance for that Communications is not a part of marketing and that you have to have someone other than a good marketing person doing your communications. She of course is looking to get herself hired. While the president doesn't plan on hiring her at this time, she (the president) has come to believe that these are two separate functions. This of course will make the person that they hire for the job, very difficult. As I mentioned, I am only a freelancer for them while they hire someone. I have been involved in some of the pre-selection for the job and they have some great candidates, but I know that it will be difficult with not having control over the communications and messaging side of things.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to re-educate the president. It is really unfortnate that she has been swayed this way by this consulant. Most people in the city don't even think that this consultant is that great.

Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

So, you are helping them hire a communications person, but want to convince them it is not necessary?

OR are you helping them select a "good marketing person". Not sure I understand your agenda.

It appears as though you are actually helping them push you out of the picture. Is this your intention?

Are you merely wanting to prove your point to the president, or secure your current status?

If it is a matter of being able to convince them you are right and the consultant is wrong, simply state your case. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it since you will be replaced no matter what.

The same holds true if you are trying to maintain your freelance postion. Sell yourself. Explain the differences. Speak up and let her know what and how you feel.

I hope this helps. If you can clarify some of the questions I raised, perhaps we can give you more specific direction.

I have been working on a Freelance basis as their Marketing Director. I have a full time position elsewhere and am not looking to work for this company. I was just helping out somone in dire need.

Intially the company was looking for a Marketing Director to handle all the regular marketing and communications issues and to set strategy and direction for the future of the company. This of course included communications, as this is an intergral part of marketing.

However, the consultant that has dropped into the picture has expressed to the President that you can't have communications as a part of marketing. It is impossible. I don't have any feelings, negative or positive, about the consultant, other than the fact that she is feeding some very inaccurate information to someone in order to get herself hired for the communications part of the job. My only intention and motive here is to have the company represented by the best person for the success of the company. Don't get me wrong, I hire consultants on a regular basis and think that they are essential, but when someone is going to the extreme of feeding such bad information to someone when they are in a position of vulnerabilty, I find that difficult.

I have sat down with the president and gave the overview of marketing and how communications is a part of the entire picture and that it most definately is a part of marketing, but unfortunately the consultant tells her that I am wrong and that I am just trying to "protect marketing people". It is really silly actually.

So, all that being said, I just want the best for the company. I hope that helps answer all of your questions.

I think you should just say your peace, give reference to this post and perhaps some other articles on this site, then drop it.

The president is going to make her own decisions, and no matter what, you are leaving. So I advise you to drop it and move on.

    We can't save everyone.

    good Luck1

Thanks to all that commented on this question.

I think at this point I have done all the information presenting that I can and I will advise the President that going to a third party, might be her best bet.

I have fulfilled my responsibility for getting them through a major crunch and a huge campaign, which was extremely successful.

    Thanks again!

A late response form me, I know, but have just come across this thread - and it occurred to me that your President could perhaps be pointed in the direction of reading MarketingProfs Roy Young's series of articles on "Making Marketing Matter to the CEO"! The first of these articles is here:

    Good luck,
