    Dear larry.sebbens,

Before you dive into any list, what are you offering? To whom will you offer it? Where—geographically—will you target? And in what category?

More importantly still is, are the people on the list you'll be acquiring actually buying/using/in need of/or aspiring to own the thing or service you're selling?

Targeting people with a high net worth is one a great idea, but in and of itself, it might not be enough.

Do you have evidence that the people you'll be targeting are spending money in your niche? And is your product or service significantly better or more desirable than similar products or services that those people are currently buying?

For anyone to spend money with you you've got to talk to them about the things they want, need, desire, or aspire to.

Buying a list might not solve this problem directly.

Your list needs to be highly-specific, because when a message is focused to the needs and current behaviours of the people on that list your message will generate a higher response, so your marketing budget works harder.

    Hello,

There are many great lists that reach high end individuals but it all depends on your product/service and offer as previously stated.

We need to match your offer/target/product or service to a list that reaches this profile.

I know this sound self promoting but most people should not be selecting their own list. A list broker spend all of their time working with lists. You do not pay more for their service since they are paid by the list owner once an order is placed. There main concern is your success.

It is all in the data and how it is gathered and so on. If you do not understand data then your should not be selecting your own list because 75% of your success or failure is directly related to the list your use. How successful would Omaha Steaks be if they mailed to vegaterians?

Another issue is how to select the data to increase the success of the mailing. For example, not everyone response their the mail so selecting a list based on income only will not work. You need to add in a selection for Mail order buyers. These are people who have responded through the mail before and likely to do so again.

Many of the answers are in your customer database.

There is a lot to consider before sending out that direct mail piece and I did not even mention anything about copy, offer and timing.

Just slapping a stamp onto a post card or #10 and sending it out without consider all of the above is what direct marketers and the general public call junk mail.

    Hope this helps!!

    Thank you
    Tom
