Creating Mission Vision And Value Statement

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hi All,

I have been tasked with drafting our companies Mission, Vision and Value statements.

I would like to ask the forum if anyone can point me in teh direction of how to go about drafting these important statements. Interesting articles would also be very beneficial.

I would also be interested to hear if anybody had any ideas on how we could include members of staff in this process.

Looking forward to your replies

Get the book the Mission Primer-- its probably in your library. It even has a CD.

I have facilitated meetings for this, and have never done it alone. What you are going to find is you'll draft the above, but your presentation will turn into a very long strategic meeting. Every time I have facilitated one, its been part of a retreat of several days. We dedicated 1/2 of a day to it-- and those were the review of an existing one. It really does work more efficiently with an independent facilitator.

Remind your taskers that its going to evolve continually. One simple word changes emphasis. It should be reviewed annually-- And every revision or review is another long strategic meeting.

There's a good explanation on this page:

I'd like to endorse Carol's comments above. This isn't something you can do in isolation, quickly, or at the first attempt.

To get these core documents right, you will need the full support of the whole leadership team and the head of the organisation.

You will need several sessions with them all. Over a period of at least several days, if not weeks.

And you will get far better results with an independent facilitator who is divorced from the result that you will with internal resources who have skin in the game.

Phil's post reminded me of another resource for you. Alot of people now are building their mission/vision statement around the 3 P's-- Product (some people use People), Profit and Planet. That is another great book for reference. "The Triple Bottom Line".

But as the others have posted-- this is a bigger task than you can imagine. And it can certainly take weeks or longer! A lot depends on the facilitator- because someone will make the suggestion to postpone, think about it and schedule another meeting. You need a facilitator to drive that you may never find the perfect words to define what you do and want to do. So you choose the words within everyone's level of tolerance. Something that while they may not agree best describes, but they have no objection to. And again, remind them-- just cause you have put these words to paper-- they aren't set in stone.

If you are going to conduct this yourself, read up on facilitation skills.
