How To Sell A Marinade To Specialty Stores In Nyc

i have a unique marinade that id like to sell to specialty stores in the nyc area. i have a commercial kitchen to prepare it in but i need help with the 1. use of preservatives and additives in small batches/ i was also considering going preservative free ( what are the risks) 2. whats the best way to approach a store i.e. buyer. 3. what do they need to know from me 4. should i look to a bigger store i.e. whole foods or look to a smaller store to start.

    Have you gone into one of the specialty stores you would target and asked them all these questions? My guess is that if you called on 5 or 6 of them and spoke to the owner/buyer, you'd have answers to all your questions.

    Try this: Get appointments (30 minutes) to pick their brains and learn what you need to know. Ask a few high-gain questions. Don't even take your product with you. This is NOT a sales call; it's strictly for information gathering. Listen carefully to what they say. Take great (and very detailed) notes.

    After you've finished at least 5 or 6 interviews like this, get your notes out and review/analyze what you've heard. You will have the answers to all your questions.

    If you don't think you can do this, you can always hire a professional market researcher to do it for you, but somehow it's never quite the same as when you do it yourself and hear the comments first-hand.
