This is a bigger task than you imagine. Even after you draft the statement -- it can take weeks to tweak it.

Get a book like "the mission primer", its at your library and includes a CD. Create two or 3-- and get a team together. It's easier to have a facilitator out of the company to conduct this meeting.

And prepare for a long meeting. Remind everyone this is a journey, not a destination. Review your statements annually. If your team does annual strategic meetings, that is the time.

Remind them also, just as there is no perfect candidate for an elected office-- you may not find the perfect mission and vision statement even after weeks of meetings. So run with one within everyone's level of tolerance (a skill set a facilitator brings). There comes a point where you either conduct another meeting, or run with what you have and revise it over time. And it will evolve over time, the right words often bubble to the surface.

Get enough people involved so there is "buy in", but not too many so that it slows you down.

These points should be a given with a company in your field. Dig deeper with your beliefs and vision. If you want to be a world-class company - what will you offer that no one else will or can? What experience and insights do you have that will make working with your company a pleasurable and money-making experience? Before you start with grand statements, start with detailed stories of how you will or would like to make a difference. Once you have a collection of stories, the values will become more obvious.
