Where Are The Best Social Media Places To Work?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am an MBA student graduating in May of 2010 and am starting to scout out places that I would like to work at post-graduation. I have a heavy interest in social media and would like to work for a company that is involved with that form of marketing and are innovators with that medium.

What companies would you say are the best places to work for someone looking to work in the Social Media and marketing fields?

Location is of no importance. I am willing to relocate if it is an amazing company and job. All for the love of social media!

Thanks all!

    Dear Erin,

The big names that most often spring to mind are Twitter, Google, YouTube, and Facebook.

But there are dozens of others, many of which you've never heard
of, but some of which are really important.

    Here are twelve to watch:

    www.crayonville.com

    www.wordpress.com

    www.undercurrent.com

    www.sixapart.com

    www.izea.com

    www.hubspot.com/

    www.radian6.com

    www.ignitesocialmedia.com

    www.cpbgroup.com

    www.ripple6.com

    https://crosstechmedia.com/

    www.buddymedia.com

You'd also do well to get closer to these companies by connecting and contributing to their respective blogs. I also suggest you connect with as many people via Twitter as possible, and three people immediately spring to mind: Chris Brogan, Mari Smith, and Guy Kawasaki (founder of www.alltop.com), all of whom you'll find on www.twitter.com and Facebook.

You might also want to review the contact on this link (617 in total) some of which may bear additional fruit.

And don't forget that two years from now (if that) all kinds of newer companies will have set up shop.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

    Erin,

Gary offers a lot in his comment to you as far as companies are concerned, not much I can add there except maybe Scout Labs and Alterian (Techrigy is their SM monitoring software).

The one thing I'd like to share are a couple of Amber Naslund's posts about hiring for social media. If you haven't come across them, you might find them helpful:

Hiring for Social Media: The Ugly Side

I think the one theme you'll see with these posts is that it's about multiple areas of expertise...NOT just social media tools. Meaning, even if you are hired to be a social media or community manager having expertise in marketing, PR, branding, communications, etc. all comes into play.

Also, look at companies like Intel, SAP, Yahoo!, etc. they have social media managers.

    Hope this helps!

Erin - Before you begin to interview, if you haven't already, start experimenting with social media yourself. Try out all the various new offerings. See what's working for different demographics. Study trends, traffic, and case studies. Become an expert before your interview to be a truly interesting candidate. Show that you don't simply admire the notion of social media from afar, but you're a wildly enthusiastic participant and already well-connected.
