Social Media Strategies For New Content Site

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I need social media strategies to promote a new venture.

My Goal is that I want to set up a company that is current - having a journalism background I want to apply my self in a business way. I.e I read the newspapers (I'm in New Zealand) and they don't tend to have a voice that everyday ordinary people connect to. Therefore I want to set up 1 x central place with today's two hot topics:

a) Social media and
b) Technology

& I want to write on interesting topics that aren't "geek" speak but rather a chat/conversational form that keeps the topics current so that anyone could understand it regardless of profession.

Given what you've described, a blog will be your best bet. I don't understand what your business will be, but using software like Wordpress, you can create a website that has blogging well-integrated and is easy for you to update.

    Dear jandewinters,

Your touch stone here is one word: integration.

The first thing you need to do is, as Jay suggests, to set up a blog.
Then you populate it with great, keyword-rich content on your chosen topic.

Next, you reach out to and connect with all the main, top level bloggers writing on the same subject. You comment on their posts. You get to know them, ask them for advice, ask them if you can be a guest writer on their site, and you invest in a chain of links to and from your site and theirs.

This helps drive traffic to your site and it establishes you as someone who knows what the hell they're talking about.

While you're doing all THAT, you set up Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and YouTube accounts and you use Twitter to drive traffic to Facebook; you use Facebook to drive traffic to your blog and you use YouTube, LinkedIn, and Flickr to link to other bloggers and other content originators.

And all of this links back you specific, reader-relevant content on your blog.

You then use Twitter and Facebook to retweet other people's content and friend other people in your niche, so you begin to build up a network. What you're doing here is building your herd. Don't skimp on this—it takes work, but don't skimp.

The best road map you'll find for this whole process is Gary Vaynerchuk's book "CRUSH IT! Why Now Is The Time to Cash In On Your Passion"

Gary explains how to set up a blog, how to use video, how to build a following, and a good deal more. And all in an easy read.

The other thing I suggest you do is read the posts from Jay, Mary, Mack, Beth, Excellira, Chris B. and the posts I and many of the other contributors here have put together on social media.

But keep in mind one thing: social media is first and foremost SOCIAL. So, avoid outright selling. Be social. Be interesting. Be friendly. And be willing to work your buns off.

There are other sites you can add content to that you can then use to link back to you blog, sites that are already well placed in the search engines:

    www.ezinearticles.com
