Use Existing Dot Net Nuke Module Or Create One?

Posted by b4 on 250 Points
We have a dot net nuke web site and need to add a business directory to the site (one where you can – but you can search/filter by category to find what you’re looking for). I am considering purchasing an existing business directory module ( https://dnnprofessor.com/Products/BusinessDirectory.aspx ), but I'd like to know if I should instead have our programmer develop a module, as he suggest. In order to help me decide, I wonder if the costs he outlines seem to make sense.
My site programmer said purchasing the existing module would require:
• $97 for the module itself
• XMod, a prerequisite module, which costs $90
• A custom File Upload control, another required module, which costs $35
• In addition, it would require approximately 3-6 hours for the programmer tp code changes required in their system that would allow this module to be installed.
• Any customizations and support that my programmer would provide could potentially take longer (or, in the worst case, be not possible whatsoever), due to the unavailability of the custom module’s code and unfamiliarity with the module itself.

So, about $850 (wouldn't be able to customize the module without extra cost.)

My programmer recommends building a (lesser-featured)version of the module would be at approximately 6-8 hours (about $800):
• Administrators may add new businesses to the directory. A business can consist of:
- The links to Google Maps themselves would be manually created by the administrator.
o Other data can be added based on requirements from customer. Simple text fields shouldn’t require much additional time, whereas more complex fields may.
• Administrators will be able to add new categories or existing ones.
o Category Name
o Interface to select zero or more businesses that belong to the given category.
• End user interface: can be done in several different ways. The cost will be about the same for any given way. We can either do:
o A list of links of given categories
o A drop down heading that will allow the user to select a different category
o A “search” interface – user checks the boxes of given categories that they wish to search for, and a listing of all businesses that fit at least one of the selected categories are returned (much like how the provider search works)
• There will be no interface developed for businesses to register to add or change information. However, the programmer could write a contact form using the form module for the business to use and link to it, then make any requested changes by the business manually.

Any thoughts on which is the better option? Thanks!

How reliable is your programmer? Is he expert in DNN programming or is he new to it? Does he deliver programs on time? I would consider those questions in the equation. We have been taken down the road of DNN by a former employee and we are a bit stranded now. The outside developer we've been working with didn't know DNN and is now learning it on the fly because the previously mentioned former employee set this course. The project is now months over due and way over budget. From my point of view there is some security in tweaking a tested and proven off-the-shelf program.
