Best Book For A Wannabe Marketer...

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I've read a few marketing books, though they seem to be focused on those in the industry. Are there any books out there that are good for individuals aspiring to break into marketing? If not a good book that a business buff would enjoy reading would be great!

    Dear milsher7,

Reading a few books isn't enough. You must devour them.

Read everything you can get your hands on from the following:

    Dan Kennedy
    Joe Sugarman
    Joe Vitale
Roy H. Williams (the Wizard of Ads) and sign up for Roy's free, Monday Morning Memo at www.mondaymorningmemo.com

Then read everything you can find by:

    Brian Tracy
    Bob Bly
    Luke Sullivan
    Neil French
    David Ogilvy
    John Caples
    Claude Hopkins

Then read books on psychology. A must read is "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" (ISBN 0-688-12816-5) by Dr Robert Cialdini

This ought to keep you gainfully employed for several months. Read. Re-read. Take notes. Then report back.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

    Dear milsher7,

I think Michael means anyone that's serious about making it as a marketer. There are way too many people who THINK that just because they have an MBA in marketing that they are, by default, marketers.

The grim reality is that many of these people know bugger all.
This does not make them marketers, it makes the DANGEROUS.

Just my humble two cents' worth.

I mean anyone who is seriously interested in Marketing as a career ... not those who just want a quick and easy read for entertainment.

Of course, some of the books are mildly entertaining as well, but the criteria for making the list was primarily the education/information value for people who are truly serious about Marketing.

Once you get through the recommended books, you can decide if there's a particular area of Marketing that you want to deep-dive, and there will be more to read. (Example: There are a number of good books on advertising, and on market research, publicity/public relations, pricing strategy, etc.)

The books on my recommended list are mostly general ... with a few that are more specific on the "additional 5 books" list.
