Hi All,

I'm looking for some good marketing publications that focus on marketing strategy and marketing philosophy.

What are you reading? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

    Dear Casey,

Strategy wise you could do a lot worse than read the three main books from Roy H. Williams: AKA The Wizard of Ads, Brian Tracy's
"The Psychology of Selling: and, Robert Cialdini's "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion".

In this latter book you'll find the Cialdini Six:

    Reciprocity
    Authority
    Commitment and consistency
    Liking
    Scarcity
    Social proof

I'd also urge you to read every book you can get your hands on from Dan Kennedy. Then, David Ogilvy's "Ogilvy on Advertising" rocks, as does "Your Marketing Sucks!" by Mark Stevens, and "CRUSH IT!" by Gary Vaynerchuk.

    I hope this list helps.

This ought to keep you going for a while.

Thank you, Gary. I appreciate the list.

Do you have any magazine recommendations?

I suggest "The Shift" by Scott Davis of Prophet. The shift is that marketing is all about strategy and the book has many case studies of CMO's now driving strategy in the C-Suite.

    Dear Casey,

Magazine-wise there's Dan Kennedy's "No BS Newsletter" which is part of Glazer Kennedy monthly membership and it's a MUST read.

You might also want to look at "SUCCESS" magazine, and "Entrepreneur". I also put out a free, weekly newsletter "The Marketeer" via my blog that you might find helpful. You'll find a link on my profile page (click on my name above). There's no hard sell and it's something I write every week to educate and inform people beyond the material I post here, and to my main blog.

You might also want to sign up for www.mondaymorningmemo.com, which is Roy Williams weekly extravaganza (which is also free). I've been a loyal follower for almost ten years and it's incredibly insightful.

I hope this helps. Goof luck to you.

If I may I'd like to "play" with Cialdini's 6 Laws of Persuasion a little bit here especially for a new entry or new product,

Scarcity -- most likely needs to be eliminated

    Liking
    Reciprocity
    Commitment and consistency
-- the above 3 elements seem to be on a 'personal' level, sort of one to one or one on one...

    Social proof
-- peer influence, we're all social 'animals', we don't want to be left alone... probably peer to peer marketing would be most effective..

    Authority
-- this guy is very powerful. it takes time to gain ground and to be able to truly connect with this "guy" and let her do magic for you...
