Men And Online Shopping

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I'm in the process of setting up an online store directed towards men. Do men buy online for women and other people in their lives? In other words, who are the real online shoppers?

I agree with Randall. I am a woman who does buy a lot on line, but mostly books and music items and a few things that I've seen in the stores but shop around online looking for better deals.

I say Randall is right because my husband does a lot of shopping online - a lot - but he doesn't buy anything for himself or even for me that isn't a book or something he's seen and touched in a store already and wants to find a better deal with online.

Since I don't know what you're planning on selling, the best I can do is tell you that men do tend to like to make sure things fit them before they leave a store. My husband HATES to return anything, so it had better fit him the first time, whether it's a shirt, shoes, pants, whatever. And that also goes for items he buys for me. I've either tried it on and he buys it then and there for me, or he makes note of it and goes back and buys it for me as a surprise later.

If you're selling accessories, you might have a shot. My husband and his peers do buy sunglasses, belts, wallets, those sorts of things online.

If you give us an idea of what you would be selling perhaps we could help you more.

Ouch, but thanks for your candid responses. The premise was to have a site where men could purchase gifts. Many of the women I know do not feel the men in their lives purchase suitable gift items, and lack romance.

Instead of directly selling the products, why not create a website that lets the visitor fill out a survey, produce a customized list of items (with referral links to the products to trusted merchants) based on your recommendations? It'll allow you to focus your business on recommendations, and not stocking products and make money on each referral.

Thanks Jay and Randall. It seems I need to go back to the drawing board. My inital business plan was to develope an online romance venue that would link individuals or couples to online stores where they could purchase tasteful romantic products (i.e. flowers, music, art and nice sensual items). Some items I would have stocked. Then, I came up with the ideal of making men my target customers to purchase romantic gifts for the women in their lives in lieu of cookware. After much brainstorming, I came up with the store name "Classy Presumptions". My tagline (new lingo for me) is that it is okay to presume she'll like it because she most likely will being that it would be something that most women adore. I'll need to figure out how to do a website with surveys, etc. I like that idea because I wouldn't have to stock the products.
