You might start by identifying the kinds of customers who currently stay at the hotel. Where are they from? Why are they in town? What are their needs?

Once you know that, you can look for others like them.

Not sure what "Easter coming up" has to do with this. Easter comes up every year, as does Christmas and a bunch of other holidays and celebrations. Is the hotel's business heavily affected by these holidays? Are you near a famous church?

What is your competition doing? Maybe you can identify a strategy that has been successful for a competitor, and then you can improve upon that and make it your own.

    Dear phylis_okeno,

As awkward as this might sound, might it not be a good idea for someone that's recently been employed as a marketer to have an idea or two of their own about marketing the service they've just been employed to market?

Put yourself in the shoes of potential guests. What Easter-related deals might THEY find appealing? What special offers might compel people to book rooms? What additional services might you, as a guest, find attractive when searching for a hotel in your desired area?

What conference, meeting, tour service, and attraction deals might you find appealing if you were a guest?

On top of this, what might your boss think were he or she to discover that you, as the new marketing manager, are asking people on a public forum how you might best come up with ideas that you've just been employed to come up with?

I'm not attempting here to be cutting. I'm simply asking the question others may have thought, or that others will ask as well.
It might also serve you well to do some networking with other hotel marketers in your category, or in your market area.

I also suggest you read Chip Conley's book "Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslo". Chip founded Joie de Vivre Hotels in 1987, and it's now California's largest boutique hotel chain. Find out more here: www.jdvhotels.com

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

    Phylis,
Not sure where you're located but you need to know the DMCs (Destination Management Companies) in the area.

It's difficult to just sell a property because few people come to a hotel just to come. They are there for a reason and they're already talking with someone about the area. That's what DMCs do.

That'll give you the group (SMERF) business. The transient business will come by talking with the local companies who are bringing in employees from around the country/world.

NOW we get into sales vs marketing. Your position seems to blur the lines....which is fine. Easter? Other than F&B I don't see an increase in business around that holiday.

What kind of beach? Could be great beach for surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, diving, kiting, volleyball, fishing, hiking, romantic beach walks or ????

Could be enough to target specific lifestyle travelers.

    hope this helps,
