How Best To Market A Emotion Based, Niche Product?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am hoping to grow a brand new start-up business. It is unique in that it is flexible to serve individuals and companies in preserving their histories for future generations. How best to initially introduce the concept, approach prospects and increase the 'want to' when it is hard to quantify the need and / or benefit? (Is this all tied into the basic value proposition?) Thank you.

Have you interviewed or surveyed prospective customers? That's how I would start.

Is the benefit something that appeals to them? Is it more appealing to some segments than others? What words do they use to express their attitudes toward the concept? Are there multiple options for the main benefit? If so, which ones work best for each segment of your audience?

These questions are at the heart of how you will proceed with this business, so I would really focus on gathering that information. There are market research professionals who do this sort of thing, of course, or you can do it yourself.

If you feel comfortable (and competent) doing it, you might still want to have a professional consult with you to make sure you get good information. It would be a shame to put in the time/effort and get ambiguous or misleading information.

I can't stress enough that you need input from your prospective target audience. When you have a novel idea like yours, and you don't know how to express it, opinions of others -- even professionals -- are not nearly as important as getting reactions from your target audience.

If you need recommendations of people who have done this before, let me know.

Study how your competition does it. What language do they use? What images? How do they market? Where? Perform a SWOT analysis of your business. And while you may have a new twist on an idea, there's no doubt someone/somewhere doing something similar. Find out what works for them and why.
